Fresh water

Term Definition
Water cycle The continuous movement of water between the atmosphere, the land, and the oceans
Infiltration The process by which water on the ground surface enters the soil.
Evaporation The process by which water changes from a liquid to a gas or water vapor.
Condensation The process by which water vapor turns back to liquid. Responsible for the formation of clouds. The opposition of evaporation.
Ground water
Water table The upper surface of underground water. The upper boundary of the zone of saturation. The boundary between the zone of ariation and the zone of saturation.
Run off Percipitation that flows over land into streams and rivers. This water later enters the oceans.
Artesian well A well in which water is under pressure; especially one in which the water flows to the surface naturally
Aquifer A body of permeable rock that can contain or transmit groundwater
Springs The Result of an aquifer being filled to the point that the water overflows onto the land surface
The process by which moisture is carried through plants from roots to small pores on the underside of leaves where it changes to vapor and is released to the atmosphere
Water released from clouds in the form of rain sleet snow or hail
The part that continues downwards through the soil until it reaches rock material that I saturated
Zone of ariation Zone nearest the surface where gaps between soil are filled with both air and water.
Zone of saturation Below the zone of Aeration where the gaps are filled with water
Permeable Ability of a substance to allow another substance to pass through it especially the ability of a porous rock, sediment, or soil to transmit fluid through pores and cracks
Non permeable Does not have the ability of a substance to allow another substance to pass through it.
Porosity Quality of being porous of full on tiny holes. Allows water to pass through it
